Grant Details

For the Conservation Blueprint, a 40-year vision for land protection in New Jersey that clarifies conservation priorities, and coordinates activities and resources of the land conservation community.

Organization Background

Working locally and globally to protect natural systems for nature and people, the Conservancy's mission is to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends.

Using science and collaborative approaches to achieve tangible, lasting results, since 1951 the Conservancy has helped protect and manage more than 120 million acres and more than 5,000 miles of river worldwide. Today, we work in every state in the U.S. and more than 60 countries.

Active in New Jersey since 1955, the Conservancy has helped protect more than 55,000 acres of natural land, manages a network of nature preserves and has over 21,000 members statewide. The New Jersey Chapter's key conservation focuses include conserving critical lands, restoring our state's great rivers and watersheds, transforming management of our coasts, developing green solutions to make our cities and towns more resilient and livable, and inspiring action to reduce carbon emissions. We work to achieve results through creative projects that serve as models for replication; partnerships that leverage resources and result in active collaboration; promoting and contributing to improvements in the knowledge base and enabling policy and regulations; use of social and economic incentives to achieve conservation-friendly policies and funding; involvement of local communities in making good choices for managing their natural resources; leveraging private philanthropic contributions with government funding to achieve our large-scale goals; and a commitment to strengthening our organizational effectiveness.

The Nature Conservancy in New Jersey is led by Dr. Barbara Brummer, State Director, a scientist with a prior successful career in the private sector. Key management staff include Bob Allen, Assistant State Director, a conservation scientist with more than 20 years' experience in government and nonprofit sectors; Tom Wells, Director of Government Relations, whose career has included heading the New Jersey Green Acres program; and Carrie VanDusen, Director of Philanthropy, whose previous position was at NJ PAC and who brings substantial fundraising management and major gifts experience to the Chapter.
