To support George Street Playhouse's world-class mainstage theater productions and arts education programs.

Organization Background

Our mission is "to enrich people's lives by producing world-class theatre." Our purpose in developing new work on the Mainstage and for the Touring Theatre is a critical component of GSP's mission; it demonstrates our values and contributes to the ongoing development of American theatre. To accomplish our mission, GSP focuses on four main goals:

-to create high quality theatre that is intellectually and emotionally challenging, including new works, re-imagined classics and educational programs that speak with relevance to society,

- to serve as a vital cultural institution in New Jersey and a creative force nationally,

-to shape and be shaped by the diverse character of our region,

-to create a nurturing home for the highest level of professional artists.

Under the leadership of Artistic Director David Saint, GSPs reputation has grown, attracting Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle OBIE, Emmy, Academy, and Tony Award-winning and nominated playwright, directors, artists, and designers to be part of our highly--acclaimed productions, including actors Tyne Daly (It Shoulda Been You), Boyd Gaines, (Sylvia and Our Town) Stephanie Zimbalist (The Subject was Roses) Marlo Thomas (Roger is Dead, New Years's Eve and Clever Little Lies) and John Glover (The Second Mrs. Wilson) and directors David Hyde Pierce, John Rando, Kathleen Marshall and Gordon Edelstein. George Street Playhouse produces a wide genre of plays -- dramas, comedies and musicals that keep our audiences entertained and enlightened.

Our Arts-in-Education Department, under Director of Education and Outreach Jim Jack, continues to grow its Artist-in-Residency programs, currently serving over 2,000 children, most with language and literacy challenges, and to expand its repertoire of character and issue-driven educational plays for students dealing with issues ranging from cyber-bullying and intolerance to childhood obesity and environmental sustainability.
