To engage local youth in planning for and development of the Paterson Great Falls National Park through the summer Youth Corps and new poetry initiative connecting the classroom experience to the park.

Organization Background

Our mission is to enhance the educational, environmental, and social benefits of the new Paterson Great Falls National Park for Paterson, New Jersey, and the nation. We work through education, advocacy, and collaboration with other nonprofit organizations, government organizations, and the private sector.

Creating the best interpretive and educational programming for the National Park and planning the National Park's development requires the social entrepreneurship and independence from government bureaucracies that only private nonprofit support can provide. Our active Board brings together an accomplished group of local leaders and nationally recognized experts in education, the environment, urban planning, and the arts. We use private funding to partner with the National Park Service and nonprofit organizations locally and nationally to achieve common goals more quickly, effectively, and with greater innovation than any single organization or level of government working alone.

Our national park has it all: the environment, sustainability, arts and literature, and history. We partner with artists, environmentalists, historians, and national park staff to create programming that offers visitors new interpretive and educational opportunities. The raceways and hydroelectric plant present a vision of clean, renewable energy. The hit Broadway musical HAMILTON has made Paterson's founding father a pop culture icon. Recent legislation we drafted expanded the park boundary to include Hinchliffe Stadium, the historic home field of the NY Black Yankees and NY Cubans, and one of the only remaining Negro League baseball stadiums in the nation. The visitor center we are now planning will be the centerpiece of this national park for the twenty-first century.

Leonard Zax, born and raised in Paterson, is the President of the Hamilton Partnership. He was previously a partner in the law firm of Latham & Watkins. Leonard received a Master in City Planning and Juris Doctor from Harvard University, where he also taught a course on historic preservation and urban revitalization. William Paterson University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters for "dedication to the founding ideals of the City of Paterson and to the realization of those ideals for a better quality of life for its citizens."
