To support 6 new plays, 20 readings, and growth of administrative infrastructure, transition to new facility and pilot programs.
The primary mission of the New Jersey Repertory Company is to develop and produce new plays and to make a lasting contribution to the repertoire of the American Stage.
In addition, we have the following additional goals:
(1) To enrich the cultural life of our community and act as a catalyst for redevelopment
(2) To nurture the work of writers from diverse backgrounds and build diverse audiences
(3) To educate and inspire young people in theater arts and play-writing
(4) To build a regional and national destination for the performing arts
Our theater was founded in 1997 and since then we have produced 115 plays of which 95 have been world-premieres. Many of the plays that we first introduced have been subsequently produced by regional theaters across the country. We have also presented over 400 developmental readings of new works and have focused on nurturing the work of young and previously unproduced writers. We are a member of the National New Play Network, a consortium of theaters committed to producing new plays and have helped to pioneer an innovative model as to how new plays are produced in the US. In 2012 we received a National Theater Company Award from the American Theater Wing that sponsors the Annual Tony Awards for our contribution to new play development.
