Organization Background

Newark Thrives! is an Out-of-School Time network established in the spring of 2016, modeled after national best practices and launched with the financial support of the Prudential and Victoria Foundations, the engagement of over 40 community stakeholders and senior leadership from the City of Newark, NPS, philanthropy, and youth service providers. The network was developed to ensure Newark youth are afforded equitable opportunities to participate in high-quality out-of-school time (OST) programming. The creation of the Newark Thrives! network represents the culmination of nearly two decades of local investment in cross-sector out-of-school time planning, programming, capacity building and system building. Newark Thrives! mission is to improve access to and participation in high quality out-of-school time opportunities for Newark's youth by leveraging resources, convening stakeholders and empowering young people, families and educators.

Newark Thrives! is the lead organization for the Newark STEAM Coalition, a cross-sector collaboration established to create a resource-rich ecosystem that prepares Newark students through Prek-16 pathways to fully participate in a 21st century STEM/STEAM workforce. The Newark STEAM Coalition was officially launched in September 2016 as one of four NJ STEM Ecosystems selected by NJ STEM Pathways Network. The Newark STEAM Coalition's mission is to develop Newark's future STEAM workforce by closing education, access and opportunity gaps through cross-sector collaborations between businesses, institutions of higher education, district leadership, youth service providers, science and cultural institutions, and workforce development agencies to align STEAM education with New Jersey's projected economic growth and global leadership.
