Organization Background

The Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center is an ecumenical effort supported and run by thirty congregations in Morris County. Our mission is to provide nutritious meals in a warm, safe, and caring environment, free of charge, to anyone who comes seeking nourishment. As part of our hospitality we encourage and assist our guests in accessing community resources, services, and educational programs. The Community Soup Kitchen builds relationships that encourage change, provides support and connects guests to the services that will help them to define and realize their full potential.

Our core values are deeply rooted in our history as an ecumenical effort supported by local congregations. We believe in the inherent worth and value of each human being. We believe that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity regardless of age, gender, race, financial qualifications, or religious beliefs. We believe everyone has a basic right to a healthy and nutritious meal and to enjoy it in a welcoming and friendly environment.

We employ six full-time employees and only a handful of part-time staff members who provide direction in the kitchen and dining room. Our Executive Director, Teresa Connolly, earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from Rutgers University and has been with the Soup Kitchen for 19 years. Our new Director of Programs and Services, Tara Ryan, earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from Columbia University. We recently hired a new full-time Outreach Worker, Manuel Diaz to work with our guests. Manuel is currently enrolled in the Rutgers University School of Social Work. Additionally, Carol Ferraro is retired from the Social Security Administration and her skill set makes her an invaluable addition to our small staff, and Vivian De Los Santos is fluent in Spanish and able to act as a translator for our guests. Over 3,000 volunteers from the community make it possible for the Soup Kitchen to keep its doors open every day, 365 days a year.
