General operating support to preserve and steward land and easements, and to inspire a conservation ethic by creatively connecting people and nature.
D&R Greenway Land Trust's mission is to preserve and care for land and inspire a conservation ethic, now and for the future. Founded in 1989, D&R Greenway has grown from a grassroots organization to a multifaceted, nationally recognized leader. We are proud to report that with twenty-seven years of creative problem solving, partnership-building and strong community ties, we have preserved 19,846 acres of watershed lands, farms and greenbelts, valued at $98,859,807. We preserve land in urban, suburban and rural communities throughout seven counties in New Jersey. Our work is urgent because NJ is the most densely populated state in the US and will be the first state to be completely built out. Preservation is vital to protect natural resources locally that maintain healthy communities.
We care for 6,224 acres - 2,443 in fee and 3,781 in 62 easements. We provide ecological restoration, habitat enhancement and public access to these lands with an extensive trail network. Each of the 126 properties we manage has a stewardship plan that addresses resource management, habitat enhancement & public access. The plans are a blueprint for enhancing properties to provide maximum improvement of water quality, protection of natural resources & support for healthy communities.
Our Johnson Education Center is a hub for teaching conservation and inspiring a conservation ethic, building a regional constituency of environmental stewards. We present thought leaders whose lectures increase awareness of environmental issues and bring about new thinking on how to address those issues. We use the arts (visual arts, music and poetry) to foster a love of nature. Through these actions we work to promote personal behaviors that support a healthier, dynamic ecosystem as well as healthier lifestyles.
We are led by guiding principles that motivate us to be innovative and responsive to opportunities, to model integrity and fiscal responsibility, to work collaboratively and engage volunteers and to leverage resources to advance our work.
