Grant DetailsTo provide general operating support for Appel Farm's transformative arts education programs and the development of an arts integration curriculum for their new charter school.
Appel Farm's mission is to provide people of all ages, cultures and economic backgrounds with a supportive, cooperative environment in which to explore and experience the fine and performing arts. Consistent with the beliefs of its founders, Appel Farm subscribes to the philosophy that the arts are an important part of the learning process; innate in every person; can inspire creativity, enhance critical thinking and promote improved socialization and citizenship; and, are beneficial to the transformative growth and well-being of individuals and communities.
In 1960, the Appels who were musicians and arts educators founded Appel Farm, which was based upon the philosophy that art transforms
people's lives and plays a crucial role in developing a child's love of learning, personal growth and sense of identity. They converted the 100+ acre farm located near Elmer, New Jersey into a unique community of students and art educators. In 1978, Appel Farm incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a professional staff and dedicated Board of Trustees who continued to expand its programs on the Appel's founding philosophy "to provide people of all ages, cultures, and economic backgrounds with a supportive, cooperative environment in which to explore the arts."
Today, Appel Farm is recognized as a major regional arts center offering high quality, transformative experiences through arts education, arts appreciation and creative expression to artists, students and the public through local, regional, national and international programs. In 2014, in accordance with Appel Farm's adaptive and evaluative culture, the decision was made by the board and new executive leadership to refocus programming efforts back to founding vision of access to high quality arts education for all people. All resources since have been realigned with an arts education vision. All programs focus on transformative experiences through arts education. In 2016, Appel Farm requested a change from a Presenting Organization to an Arts Basic to Education Organization within the New Jersey State Council on the Arts categories for their funding cycle. With greater support from other NJSCA arts education organizations, Appel Farm will work to shift public perception so everyone realizes the dedicated mission to Arts Education.
