Organization Background

Celebrating its 60th anniversary, Appel Farm has evolved over the many decades to become the arts education leader in South Jersey. Providing transformative arts and learning experiences through and for diverse and inclusive communities with a unique collaborative approach is the hallmark of the organization. Offering dozens of programs on the 115-acre campus in rural New Jersey and several more dozens off-site around the state, Appel Farm impacts over 30,000 people annually. The organization genuinely embraces a philosophy that now more than ever in our country, we need to create communities where everyone (people of all backgrounds, races, religions, sexual orientations, disabilities, etc.) can come together in harmony and through the arts find empathy, growth and ultimately their individual best selves. Appel Farm continues to join professional teaching artists, educators, families, youth, millennials, and more to learn through all of the fine and performing arts genres. Over the past five years, under new leadership, the organization?s focus has been aligned fully to embrace arts education initiatives. Appel Farm has launched over 20 new initiatives in those five years including: the state?s first STEAM charter middle school (opened Sept. 2019), a STEAM afterschool program, a collaborative called Families to College providing whole family mentoring to increase the college attainment rate of families in Cumberland County, the Gloucester and Salem County Teen Arts Festival, a statewide Scholastic Arts Awards, the Region Two Poetry Out Loud site, overnight arts retreat series empowering females called Girls Out Loud, 21st Century Learning Center partners with long-term artist residencies, arts-integration teacher professional development workshops and support, curricular partnerships for public school districts to launch new fine and performing arts programs, overnight Family Camp weekends and of course Appel Farm?s acclaimed residential fine and performing arts camp.
