December 2016 Grants Overview

At its final board meeting of the year, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Trustees approved 58 grants totaling $2.4 million to nonprofit organizations working to strengthen communities in New Jersey.

A full listing of this round of grants is below:

  • American Littoral Society (Highlands, Monmouth County): $70,000 for general operating support to evaluate, expand, and strengthen public policy and conservation action to protect critical wildlife and habitat, and advance clean water efforts. Program Area: Environment      
  • Americans for the Arts (Washington, District of Columbia): $20,000 to support the third year of New Jersey's participation in AFTA's State Policy Pilot Program. Program Area: Education        
  • Arts and Education Center (Matawan, Monmouth County): $15,000 to provide scholarship awards for student and teacher participants in the NJ State Teen Arts Festival, as well as support for the Dodge Poetry Cafe. Program Area: Education   
  • Arts Horizons (Englewood, Bergen County): $20,000 for innovative distance learning arts training for teachers. Program Area: Education
  • Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions (Mendham, Morris County): $85,000 for general operating support to educate, mobilize, and empower municipal environmental commissions to protect and restore natural resources through local action. Program Area: Environment            
  • Clean Ocean Action (Highlands, Monmouth County): $65,000 for general operating support of grassroots advocacy, community education and engagement, and science and research to protect New Jersey marine resources from polluted runoff and ocean industrialization. Program Area: Environment
  • Clean Water Fund (Long Branch, Monmouth County): $65,000 to advance climate justice, resiliency and sound water and infrastructure policies in Newark and New Jersey's urbanized communities. Program Area:  Environment            
  • coLAB Arts Inc (New Brunswick, Middlesex County): $12,500 to provide in-depth theater instruction, by linking the coLAB network of artists with New Brunswick high school students.  Program Area: Education  
  • Community Foundation of South Jersey (Haddonfield, Camden County): $60,000 for general operating support to increase community engagement and regional public and private sector philanthropy, to host board leadership training workshops in south Jersey; and  to develop the Creative Atlantic City Community Fund.   • Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center (Morristown, Morris County):  $30,000 to provide food and supportive services to the homeless and working poor. Program Area: Morristown        
  • Creative Capital Foundation (New York, NY): $56,000 to engage a second cohort of New Jersey artists in career-building and professional development opportunities through a blended learning platform. Program Area: Arts
  • Dance to Learn Fund (Dance New Jersey) (Montclair, Essex County): $85,000 to expand and disseminate the Dance to Learn Curriculum to greater numbers of students and teachers through New Jersey's professional dance community during the 2016-17 school year. Program Area: Education         

  • D & R Greenway Land Trust (Princeton, Mercer County): $65,000 for general operating support to preserve and steward land and easements, and to inspire a conservation ethic through creative connections between people and nature. Program Area: Environment      
  • East Coast Greenway Alliance (Durham, N.C.): $15,000 to host the East Coast Greenway River Relay through New Jersey and improve the greenway experience. Program Area: Environment     
  • Eastern Environmental Law Center (Newark, Essex County): $85,000 for general operating support to provide essential legal services to New Jersey’s environmental sector to address environmental justice, climate change/clean energy, land use, and water quality issues. Program Area: Environment     
  • Education Law Center (Newark, Essex County): $70,000 to support the organization's advocacy on four key education priorities: fair school funding, school construction, preschool expansion, and standards and assessments. Program Area: Education               
  • Field Trip New Jersey at Community Foundation of New Jersey (Morristown, Morris County): $25,000 for implementation of the Field Trip NJ program during the 2016-17 school year which will support bus transportation for field trips to arts and culture, nature and science, and historic venues, as well as college and career-readiness trips.   • Foundation for Educational Administration (Monroe Township, Middlesex County): $175,000 to provide district/school creative leadership teams with programming to design and implement arts integration strategies in order to improve teacher practice, increase student achievement, and enliven classroom and school cultures.   • Funders' Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities (Coral Gables, Fla.): $10,000 for continued support of the Stormwater Funders' Group to support shared learning, network building, and collaborative work among funders focused on sustainable stormwater management. Program Area: Environment 
  • GreenFaith (Highland Park, Middlesex County): $47,500 to strengthen and expand the network of New Jersey GreenFaith Circles, local organizing platforms for environmental action led by diverse faith communities. Program Area: Environment     
  • Hackensack Riverkeeper (Hackensack, Bergen County): $65,000 for general operating support to protect the Hackensack River watershed and to support a shared staff attorney position with NY/NJ Baykeeper. Program Area:  Environment   
  • Hamilton Partnership For Paterson (Paterson, Passaic County): $2,500 for one-time support to help send 40 Paterson students to see the Broadway production of Hamilton as part of a Rockefeller Foundation effort to make sure young people experience this groundbreaking musical about one of Paterson's founding fathers.   • Monmouth Conservation Foundation (Middletown, Monmouth County):  $20,000 for general operating support to protect open space, create parks, preserve farmland, and safeguard waterways throughout Monmouth County. Program Area:  Environment     
  • NJ Spotlight (Montclair, Essex County): $30,000 to expand quality journalism on issues impacting New Jersey while diversifying revenue streams and better engaging audiences throughout the state. Program Area:  Informed Communities
  • Natural Lands Trust (Media, Pa.): $40,000 to support land conservation, stewardship, and promote conservation practices on south Jersey farms through promotion and implementation of USDA programs. Program Area: Environment               
  • Natural Resources Defense Council (New York, NY): $25,000 to support advocacy on reducing stormwater pollution and expanding green infrastructure in New Jersey, by combining local knowledge with national policy expertise. Program Area: Environment     
  • New Jersey Audubon Society (Bernardsville, Somerset County): $60,000 for general operating support to further natural resource protection through active stewardship, meaningful public policy changes, land protection and Delaware River Watershed preservation. Program Area: Environment  
  • New Jersey Conservation Foundation (Chester Township, Morris County): $10,000 to attract a diverse audience for the NJ Land Conservation Rally, an educational conference about open space and farmland preservation. Program Area: Environment     
  • New Jersey League of Conservation Voters Education Fund (Trenton, Mercer County):  $25,000 for the Green in ’17 Campaign to develop a coordinated, comprehensive policy agenda and public education campaign to make conservation a prominent issue in the 2017 New Jersey Gubernatorial race and transition. Program Area: Environment              
  • New Jersey Policy Perspective, Inc. (Trenton, Mercer County): $20,000 for research and strategic support related to the FCC Broadcast Incentive Auction, and a public education campaign to secure long-term funding for community news and information in New Jersey.   • New Jersey Public Radio at New York Public Radio (New York, Essex County): $75,000 for New Jersey Public Radio, a multiplatform news unit providing public service journalism and engagement for New Jersey. Program Area: Informed Communities    
  • New Jersey Theatre Alliance (West Orange, Essex County): $3,500 to support the first-ever New Jersey-based convening of the Association of Performing Arts Service Organizations' Conference (APASO), an international consortium of nonprofit arts service organizations. Program Area: Arts
  • New Jersey Tree Foundation Inc (Jackson, Ocean County): $30,000 for general operating support to engage communities in urban forestry activities and stewardship as well as provide transitional, green jobs to parolees. Program Area: Environment
  • New Jersey Youth Theatre (Westfield, Union County): $25,000 for support of exemplary performance opportunities and professional training for aspiring young artists. Program Area: Education              
  • Newark Boys Chorus School (Newark, Essex County): $20,000 to continue strengthening the academic and music programs at the Newark Boys Chorus School. Program Area: Education
  • Renew the Arts Initiative at Community Foundation of New Jersey (Newark, Essex County): $20,000 for the support of the coordinator of the Renew the Arts Initiative, a strategic approach to advancing arts education in the Newark Public School district. Program Area: Education             
  • Newark Thrives! at Community Foundation of New Jersey (Newark, Essex County): $10,000 to provide support for the project coordinator of the new Newark STEAM Coalition. Program Area: Education
  • NJTV (Englewood, Essex County): $30,000 to support the continuation of NJTV's "Ask Away" initiative, which deepens connections between the community and the newsroom. Program Area: Informed Communities
  • Northeast Organic Farming Association (Hillsborough, Somerset County): $45,000 for general operating support to lead, unite and assist the regional sustainable agriculture movement through education, outreach and advocacy. Program Area: Environment     
  • Open Space Institute, Inc (New York, N.Y.): $30,000 to support multifaceted land conservation initiatives in New Jersey. Program Area:  Environment
  • Partnership for the Delaware Estuary (Wilmington, Del.): $40,000 for general operating support for Delaware Estuary protection and restoration projects in New Jersey. Program Area: Environment               
  • Passaic River Coalition (Morristown, Morris County): $40,000 for general operating support for organizational and programmatic restructuring to sustain advocacy, outreach, and education to protect the Passaic River Watershed. Program Area: Environment         
  • Paterson Alliance (Paterson, Passaic County): $45,000 for skill-building programming geared for mid-level management staff of local non-profit, service agencies in the city of Paterson. Program Area: Technical Assistance      
  • Pathways to College (Teaneck, Bergen County): $25,000 to continue to significantly increase opportunities for artistically talented students, at program sites in Newark, to fulfill their artistic promise. Program Area: Education 
  • Pinelands Preservation Alliance (Southampton, Burlington County): $75,000 for general operating support of public engagement, monitoring, and advocacy to protect the pinelands and the Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer. Program Area: Environment     
  • Pre-K Our Way (Florham Park, Morris County): $25,000 for communication and  community engagement efforts to advance public support for expansion of high-quality pre-k into more New Jersey communities. Program Area: Public Policy        
  • Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program at Rutgers University Foundation (New Brunswick, Middlesex County): $45,000 for the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program to provide technical support to communities to adopt green infrastructure strategies and implement projects designed to improve water quality and reduce flooding. Program Area: Environment    
  • Sister Cities Girlchoir (Camden, Camden County): $30,000 to build communities of music makers that empower at-risk girls to occupy their unique position in transforming our world. Program Area: Education       
  • Sphinx Organization (Detroit, Mich.): $5,000 for the Sphinx Artist Residency Program which will bring classical musicians of color to New Jersey schools and El Sistema programs. Program Area: Education
  • Stevens Institute of Technology (Hoboken, Hudson County): $50,000 for arts-integration professional development of new middle school science and art teacher teams and to strengthen the current STEAM teams. Program Area: Education 
  • Stony Brook - Millstone Watershed Association (Pennington, Mercer County): $210,000 for general operating support for science, advocacy, and community engagement to ensure that water is clean, safe, and healthy for communities in central New Jersey, and to support statewide watershed protection efforts through the Watershed Institute. Program Area:  Environment     
  • The Nature Conservancy (Chester, Morris County): $60,000 for general operating support to advance the health and resilience of the state's lands and waters for the benefit of people and nature. Program Area: Environment       
  • The Nature Conservancy (Chester, Morris County): $30,000 for the Conservation Blueprint, a 40-year vision for land protection in New Jersey that clarifies conservation priorities, and coordinates activities and resources of the land conservation community. Program Area: Environment 
  • Trenton Public Education Foundation (Trenton, Mercer County): $15,000 for support of the leadership of the Any Given Child Trenton arts education strategic planning effort. Program Area: Education               
  • Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts (Berkeley Heights, Union County): $40,000 to provide students at the Community Charter School of Paterson with after-school and weekend El Sistema music education programming. Program Area: Education              
  • El Sistema New Jersey Alliance at Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts (Berkeley Heights, Union County): $40,000 to support the work of the El Sistema New Jersey Alliance in connecting and strengthening El Sistema-inspired programs statewide. Program Area: Education      
  • WHYY (Philadelphia, Pa.): $25,000 to continue and grow WHYY's multimedia journalistic coverage of Southern New Jersey through NewsWorks.org and WHYY-FM. Program Area: Informed Communities               
  • Yendor Arts Inc (Newark, Essex County): $15,000 for general operating support for the Advantage Arts education program in partnership with Newark Public Schools, Drew University , and the City’s Newark Summer Works program, and for community-based arts programming. Program Area: Arts, Education
