WHAT WE DO: Jazz House Kids is a Montclair-based nonprofit that has gained a reputation as one of the nation’s preeminent arts education and performance organizations. Central to Jazz House Kids’ mission is bridging the gap in access to the arts. The organization levels the playing field for students from low- and moderate-income families, so that they can receive the same great jazz education as their peers from wealthier families. Jazz House Kids focuses on three areas: schools, our Jazz House facility in downtown Montclair, and in the community.
WHY WE’RE GREAT: Jazz House Kids has brought music, mentoring, education and apprenticeship to students from diverse backgrounds who have performed before more than half a million enthusiastic fans. About 40 percent of students at the Jazz House receive need-based tuition assistance and 100 percent of the 27 high seniors who graduated in 2014 have gone on to college, receiving a collective $550,000 in scholarships.
HOW YOUR DONATION WILL HELP: Your tax-deductible gift will fulfill the dreams of hundreds of young musicians who look to Jazz House Kids to cultivate their talents and become part of something larger than themselves. More than $140,000 in tuition assistance and scholarships were awarded in the 2013-14 year and $314,000 in program funds were directed specifically toward Newark’s public and charter schools. The Dodge Foundation is offering $1,000 challenge grants to each of the organizations featured in the Jersey Give-Back Guide. To be eligible, each organization must receive at least 50 donations through the Guide by December 31st. Help them reach their goal and get that extra $1,000!
