When Gallery Aferro submitted their proposal in our most recent round of grantmaking, we weren’t familiar with them, but we were intrigued by their current programming, their aspirations, and their location right on Market Street in Newark.

After meeting with co-founders Emma Wilcox and Evonne Davis  and touring their gallery and studio, as well as meeting some of the artists working there, we were impressed. Their work to date and their expansive vision for the work of their gallery and its impact in Newark as well as regionally and even internationally (artists from countries around the world have applied for their residencies/studio program) is inspiring. Furthermore, they offer exemplary mentoring opportunities for young artists.
