June 2016 Grants Overview

At its second board meeting of the year, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Trustees approved 95 grants totaling $4.5 million to nonprofit organizations working to strengthen communities in New Jersey.

A full listing of this round of grants is below:

  • 10 Hairy Legs (Highland Park, Middlesex County): $20,000 for general operating support of 10 Hairy Legs dance company's performance season and education programs. Program Area: Arts
  • Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre (Fords, Middlesex County): $15,000 for general operating support of Alborada's performance season and capacity building. Program Area: Arts
  • Algonquin Arts (Manasquan, Monmouth County): $10,000 to support the expansion of existing programming and the development of new mission-driven arts initiatives. Program Area: Arts
  • Aljira (Newark, Essex County): $60,000 for general operating support of year-round exhibitions, programs and services to Newark and New Jersey residents, artists, and visitors. Program Area: Arts
  • Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (New York, New York): $10,000 for support of summer 2016 AileyCamp Newark and AileyDance Kids residencies in Newark Public Schools during the 2016-17 academic year. Program Area: Education
  • American Theater Group Inc (Rahway, Middlesex County): $12,500 for general operating support of American Theater Group's performance season. Program Area: Arts
  • Appel Farm Arts and Music Center (Elmer, Salem County): $75,000 to provide general operating support for Appel Farm's transformational arts education programs. Program Area: Education
  • Arden Theatre Company (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania): $20,000 for support of Arden for All, a theatre access and literacy-based arts-integration education program in Camden Public Schools. Program Area: Education
  • Art Pride New Jersey Foundation (Burlington, Burlington County): $150,000 for general operating support for Art Pride New Jersey to implement its strategic plan and increase organizational capacity to maximize advocacy and support for the arts in New Jersey. Program Area: Arts
  • Arts Council of Princeton (Princeton, Mercer County): $15,000 for general operating support of exhibitions and related free programming. Program Area: Arts

  • Center for Contemporary Art (Bedminster Twp., Somerset County): $20,000 for general operating support of exhibitions, classes, and other educational programs. Program Area: Arts
  • Center for Investigative Reporting (Emeryville, California): $100,000 for continued collaborative investigative reporting featuring innovative public engagement with the news through alternative storytelling practices, cross-sector partnerships, social media and community events.   • Children's Home Society of New Jersey (Trenton., Mercer County): $35,000 to support the Trenton Education Dance Institute in Trenton schools, and for the SWAT and Celebration after-school student dance companies. Program Area: Education
  • City Without Walls (Newark, Essex County): $35,000 for general operating support to help advance the careers of artists; expand the audiences for contemporary art; and educate communities. Program Area: Arts
  • Council of New Jersey Grantmakers (Trenton, Mercer County): $25,000 for general operating support of the Office of the Newark Philanthropic Liaison in collaboration with philanthropy and government partners. Program Area: Public Policy
  • Creative New Jersey (Morristown, Morris County): $200,000 for operating support of community engagement programs and events that fuel creativity and collaboration between highly diverse groups of individuals as essential components of thriving communities.   • Eagle Theatre, Inc. (Hammonton, Atlantic County): $15,000 for general operating support of Eagle Theatre's 2016-17 performance season to serve South New Jersey audiences. Program Area: Arts
  • Educational Arts Team (Jersey City, Hudson County): $25,000 to support the Bringing Literature to Life arts-integration program in Jersey City Public Schools that will improve teaching methods and increase student academic performance by infusing theatre and improvisational arts into the language arts curriculum.   • Folger Shakespeare Library (Washington, DC): $35,000 to support SHAKESPERIENCE:NJ, a teacher training program serving five New Jersey middle and high school classrooms. Program Area: Education
  • Free Press (Florence, Massachusetts): $200,000 for support of News Voices New Jersey which is building relationships between newsrooms and communities across the state, as well as support for research and civic engagement efforts related to the FCC Broadcast Incentive Auction.   • GlassRoots, Inc. (Newark, Essex County): $45,000 to support GlassRoots' work to counter the challenges youth face through the exploration and creation of glass art. Program Area: Education
  • Hunterdon Art Museum (Clinton, Hunterdon County): $50,000 for general operating support of exhibitions and education programs in contemporary art, craft and design. Program Area: Arts

  • Little Kids Rock (Verona, Essex County): $60,000 to provide students in New Jersey public schools the opportunity to participate in a Modern Band program. Program Area: Education

  • Morristown Neighborhood House (Morristown, Morris County): $75,000 General operating support of high quality preschool and community educational programming to support learning and increase academic success for a multicultural community. Program Area: Morristown
  • Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company (Fort Lee, Bergen County): $50,000 for general operating support of current programming and new initiatives in Hudson County and celebration on Ellis Island. Program Area: Arts
  • New City Kids (Jersey City, Hudson County): $25,000 for support of the Music School and Teen Life leadership program for Jersey City’s at-risk, low income children and teenagers. Program Area: Education

  • New Jersey Festival Orchestra (Westfield, Union County): $35,000 for general operating support of the New Jersey Festival Orchestra's productions, artistic partnerships and education work. Program Area: Arts
  • New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (Newark, Essex County): $90,000 to support the Symphony's 2016-17 artistic operations and education and community engagement programs. Program Area: Arts
  • New Jersey Tap Ensemble (Montclair, Essex County): $10,000 to support tap education programs that help develop the next generation of tap performers and promote understanding and appreciation of the art form. Program Area: Education
  • New Jersey Theatre Alliance (West Orange, Essex County): $75,000 for general operating support to strengthen member theatres by providing resources and collaborative programs to help them reach their organizational potential. Program Area: Arts

  • Pro Bono Partnership (Parsippany, Morris County): $15,000 to support free legal assistance to nonprofit organizations in New Jersey including those working in the environment, arts, education and community information sectors. Program Area: Technical Assistance
  • ProPublica (New York, New York): $100,000 for continued general support of ProPublica's investigative journalism in the public interest, with special applicability to lessons for New Jersey. Program Area: Media
  • Pushcart Players (Verona, Essex County): $35,000 for general operating support to provide theater programming that fosters understanding, discovery, participation and love of the arts. Program Area: Arts
  • Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts (Millville, Cumberland County): $25,000 for general operating support of artistic, educational and cultural enrichment in the southern New Jersey region. Program Area: Arts
  • Rutgers University Foundation (New Brunswick, Middlesex County): $35,000 for continued support of NJ Spark, a community media and journalism social justice lab that trains undergraduates and connects with communities on critical issues. Program Area: Media
  • Rutgers University, Graduate School of Education (New Brunswick, Middlesex County): $45,000 for project support to extend continuous learning for Arts Integration professional development, increasing school leaders' self-efficacy, as well as students' engagement and motivation.   • Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts (Camden, Camden County): $35,000 for arts-in-education and community arts programs in Camden, NJ. Program Area: Education
  • School of the Garden State Ballet (Livingston, Essex County): $10,000 to support scholarship opportunities for underserved, at-risk students to access comprehensive, long-term ballet training opportunities at the dance school. Program Area: Education
  • Settlement Music School of Philadelphia (Camden, Camden County): $10,000 to provide project support for financial aid and programming with Camden's Creative Arts Morgan Village Academy. Program Area: Education
  • Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (Madison, Morris County): $120,000 to support The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey's 2016 season of artistic and education programs. Program Area: Arts
  • Sharron Miller's Academy for the Performing Arts (Upper Montclair, Essex County): $30,000 for an extensive dance residency serving 2,100 students in grades 1 through 5 in the East Orange school district during 2016-17. Program Area: Education

  • William Paterson University (Wayne, Passaic County): $130,000 for support of Creativity Professors-in-Residence to work in Paterson schools and to place art at the center of K-12 interdisciplinary curriculum design and instruction through STEAM programming. Program Area: Education
  • Young Audiences New Jersey & Eastern Pennsylvania (Princeton, Mercer County): $135,000 for Young Audience's Creativity Incubator, which researches and develops models of arts education, exploring creative, innovative methods of teaching and learning. Program Area: Education
