Rocco Landesman, the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, has spent the last two years making the case for the arts as an important economic engine, and now he has enlisted several major foundations, corporations and federal agencies to help fund innovative cultural projects and programs that serve as anchors and catalysts in their communities. The coalition is called ArtPlace, and its pooled funds total $11.5 million in grants and an additional $12 million in loans, all of which is administered by the Nonprofit Finance Fund.
“Too many people think of the arts as luxuries, as jewels, things that may not be necessary in times of need, things that can be put off,” says Luis Ubiñas, President of the Ford Foundation and chairman of the ArtPlace Presidents Council. “The arts are inherently valuable, and they’re also part of what’s going to get us out of this economic problem we’re in.”
A number of projects have already received funding, including a program in St. Paul to install more than 100 arts projects along a new light-rail line, and a plan to renovate P.S. 109 in East Harlem as a home for 90 artists and their families as well as 13,000 square feet of space for community and cultural groups.
