The Dodge Foundation seeks to fund organizations which “provide transformational, experiential educational opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom for young people who have limited access to educational excellence.” In our most current round of grants, we brought Christ the King Preparatory School, of Newark, on board as a new grantee because they believe that experience in the workplace enhances the education of a student while also providing opportunities to learn more about personal responsibility and, ultimately, potential career choices.
Christ the King is a parochial school; contributions to the school help offset the costs of tuition by “charging” companies for the interns who are made available to them. In turn, this reduces the cost of tuition for those students.
This model has worked very well for the school’s corporate partners in the Newark area, but Christ the King came to the Dodge Foundation with an interest in placing their students in nonprofit organizations as well. Dodge’s $15,000 grant will help place three interns at the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (another Dodge grantee), whose offices are located in Newark, making it a very convenient location for a work placement, while also allowing students with an interest in the arts to experience working for one of Newark’s finest arts organizations.
