Sustainable Morristown

October 10, 2008

Last week, the Town of Morristown, in collaboration with the Morristown Partnership and the Municipal Land Use Center at The College of New Jersey, hosted a two-day public forum encouraging citizens of Morristown to share their ideas, concerns and hopes for the future of Morristown. A group of professionals from the American Institute of Architects’ Sustainable Design Assessment Team (AIA-SDAT) took the public’s input and formulated recommendations, which they presented in a “See the Vision, Share the Vision” program at the Community Theatre.

Some of their recommendations included:

• Improving pedestrian and bicycle safety by developing green streets.
• Creating linkages that connect parks, open space and public areas together.
• Reducing polluted storm water entering lakes and waterways, and
• Adding more housing in and adjacent to downtown.

The AIA-SDAT program, in its third year of operation, brings together architects and other professionals from around the country to provide road maps for communities seeking to improve their sustainability; Morristown is one of only 10 communities in the US to receive technical assistance through the Sustainable Design Assessment Team (SDAT) program this year.
